Syracuse University - Syracuse, NY
“Scholarship in Action” is the motto of Syracuse University, also referred to as SU, a private research university nestled in the University Hill neighborhood of Syracuse, New York.
From its founding in 1870, Syracuse University has been the embodiment of its motto, which they define as “education that transcends traditional boundaries,” engaging the world “through extensive partnerships and immersion opportunities.”
To that end its students, in partnership with the US Green Building Council and others, are engaged in the university’s local projects, primarily the renovation and revitalization of homes and former businesses in the nearby abandoned industrial area, the SALT District of the Near Westside. The goal of the initiative is to create a new epicenter of artistic and cultural development in the area. The name comes from the acronym of Syracuse, Art, Life, and Technology, or SALT; there is also historical meaning; the neighborhood was home to a salt works in its early industrial history.
According to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, SU is a research university with “a high level of research activity.” The school supports research in the fields of management and business, sciences, engineering, education, information studies, energy, environment and other specialized areas.
Many of the school’s alumni are nationally-recognized names, including bestselling novelist Joyce Carol Oates; Donna Shalala, former United States Secretary of Health and Human Services; Joe Biden, Vice President of the United States; Stephen Crane, author of The Red Badge of Courage and Ted Koppel, award-winning broadcast journalist.
