Howard University was established in 1866, shortly after the Civil War, by the First Congregational Society of Washington as a seminary for educating African-American clergymen. The school quickly developed into a university with the approval of President Andrew Johnson in 1867.
Today, Howard University is one of the country’s 48 private Doctoral/Research Extensive universities. Students choose from over 120 areas of study, and the University has produced more on-campus African-American Ph.D.s than any other university in the world. Famous alumni include actress Phylicia Rashad, the late US Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Toni Morrison.
The campus spans 256 acres in northwest Washington. The campus contains several historic landmarks, including the Fredrick Douglass Memorial Hall and the Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel. After selecting an apartment in the Howard University area, you’ll be able to enjoy the famous attractions of DC and discover the hidden treasures the area holds, including several five-star, celebrity-chef-owned restaurants and a trendy music scene.
