Browncroft Neighborhood

The Browncroft Historic District, named after its major developer C.J. Brown, is encircled by Browncroft Boulevard, Winton Road, Blossom Road, and Newcastle Road. While the neighborhood has historically sat within this unofficial boundary, it has now grown as far north as Merchants Road, and as far east as Panorama Trail.

Location is everything to those living in this mostly residential locale. Whether the preference in shopping venues lies with Tops Markets or Wegman’s, at least one of each can be found within only a few miles. The 590 expressway provides quick access to nearby townships, including Penfield, Webster, East Rochester, Brighton, and Downtown Rochester.

Entertainment seekers usually look to the natural aspects of the Browncroft area. Irondequoit Bay, only a short drive away, is an ideal location for boating, fishing, and picnicking. Heberle Farms is located directly off of Browncroft Boulevard, for those who are interested in horseback riding. In fact, its trails lead straight through Ellison Park.

A haven for dog walkers, runners, tennis players, and Frisbee lovers, Ellison Park holds endless possibilities for lovers of the outdoors. Even amidst Rochester’s harshest winters, families can almost always be seen together, sleds in hand.

Hiking is becoming increasingly popular in the area. An interesting historical trail, called the Rifle Range Trail, begins on Empire Boulevard and passes by the Irondequoit Wetlands. It exhibits an old rifle range formerly used by the military and state police. The trail ends at Browncroft Boulevard. Novice hikers are advised that the difficulty level of the trail is high.

The entire area is extremely pedestrian-friendly. In warmer weather, the sidewalks are rarely empty. Bicycles have been particularly popular as of late, and many cyclists are traveling in groups, often with small children. Residents have no major concern for safety, and the neighborhood is not known for serious crime activity.

Some of the most well-known parts of the extended Browncroft neighborhood include the Small World Nursery (founded by previous television show host Rita Barton from Romper Room), the family home of former Foreigner singer Lou Gramm, and the studio of well-known FM radio station Legends 102.5.
