Saint Louis at a Glance
The Southampton Neighborhood
Rated one of the “top residential choices” for the 25-35 age group in St. Louis, the charming neighborhood of Southampton (SOHA) was named for its British counterpart by the original building supervisor of the area. Today, many of the community’s streets and surrounding St. Louis neighborhoods have similar British town names.
Although its roots go to back to Decker Farm, Southampton’s first homes were built around the time of the World’s Fair in the early 1900s. Many more were built in the 1930s, when the neighborhood became populated with the brick arts and crafts-style cottages that are so popular today and give the neighborhood its cozy personality.
Other popular housing styles include neo-Tudor and a home style called “Four Square,” which often features art glass, gabled roofs, and hardwood floors. Perfect for families or singles, this pedestrian-friendly area offers plenty of local dining, entertainment, and retail conveniences. St. Louis’s first environmentally oriented home products store (Home Eco) is located in Southampton.
In addition, residents appreciate the easy access to downtown St. Louis amenities, such as Powell Symphony Hall, Muny Opera Theater, Bush Stadium, the Arch, and many others. Missouri Botanical Garden, the country’s oldest continuously operating garden and a National Historic Landmark, is also close by.
In their own neighborhood, Southampton residents cluster at Willmore Park. This city park offers two lakes with fishing, lighted softball and baseball fields, lighted tennis courts, a bike trail, playground areas, and picnic shelters. The most recent addition to Willmore Park is an off-leash dog park, which is run with volunteer help from the Southampton Neighborhood Association.
The Southampton Neighborhood Association has been active since 1922 and meets monthly at the Presbyterian Parish Hall on Macklind Avenue. It puts out a neighborhood newsletter every two months.
