Soulard Neighborhood

The Soulard neighborhood, located just south of downtown St. Louis, has one of the most colorful pasts of any area within St. Louis’ environs.

Part of the city’s Old Frenchtown area, Soulard was named after Antoine and Julia Cerre Soulard, two entreprenuers who firmly planted themselves, along with their their reputations, throughout St. Louis. A refugee of the French Revolution, Antoine Soulard was among the first to develop the area. He also was the initial surveyor of the district, commissioned by the Spanish government.

The region of Soulard, which was formally declared an historic district in 1972, boasts the oldest Farmer’s Market “west of the Mississippi.” Julia Soulard is credited with its inception. In an extremely business-savvy and humanitarian move, Soulard donated two half city blocks to the city with the strict provision that the acreage be used solely as a market for area farmers to sell their wares.

In so doing, she simultaneously increased the value of her own property and provided a tangible venue wherein local French-owned farms could ultimately profit.

While Soulard has a rich history, the area has not merely rested on its historic laurels. Through the last century and a half, the district has remained culturally and economically diverse. Eclectic pubs and bars abound, and the area is also home to the Anheuser-Busch North American center of operations.

Additionally, the area remains in the foreground of forward-thinking progressiveness, especially when it comes to animal activism. As an example, a dog park, which is comprised of three-quarters of an acre, was established to provide a haven for canines and their loyal owners in 2004 — certainly a complement to the area’s annual Wiener Dog Races, a precursor to Soulard’s yearly Mardi Gras celebration, which is the second largest in the country.
