Saint Louis at a Glance
Shaw Saint Neighborhood
Englishman Henry Shaw came to St. Louis in 1819, at 19. He prospered, retired young and began collecting exotic plants. After developing botanical gardens around his stately home, he donated them to the city. They became the Missouri Botanical Gardens, which encloses one side of the Shaw neighborhood. Tower Grove Park borders another side, and Shaw donated its land too.
Tower Grove Avenue is the west boundary of Shaw. On the north, the I-44 freeway is the boundary. South Grand Boulevard is the boundary on the east, with a lush park on that side too, Compton Hill. On the south, Magnolia Avenue divides the neighborhood from Tower Grove Park. The zip code for Shaw is 63110.
Shaw Place, its houses designed by George Barnett, is a shady oval surrounded by stately homes. It was built to resemble Shaw’s childhood home, a nineteenth-century English village. Flora Place is a long oval of large brick and rusticated stone houses adorned with touches of Tudor, Greek Revival or Federal design. A leafy center strip gives the street a nearly rural feel.
Most other streets of the neighborhood are not as grand as Flora Place, but they too carry out Shaw’s plan. Many of the bungalows, apartment buildings, and two-family or four-family homes of the neighborhood were built in matching style.
Some apartments on Magnolia Street face Tower Grove Park, and more appear on nearly every street of the neighborhood, with large apartment buildings and condominium developments on the neighborhood’s main roads.
Shaw is airy, leafy and surrounded by beautifully tended parks. Even the dog park at Cleveland and Thurman Avenues has landscaping that almost makes it a dog garden. The Shaw is a neighborhood where residents, and their pets, can feel at home in a romantic vision of the past.
