Built in 1830, the United States Naval Observatory (USNO) is one of the nation’s oldest scientific agencies – it is also the official residence of the Vice President of the United States. When it was constructed, the primary purpose of the observatory was to care for the Navy’s navigational equipment. Today, the USNO’s mission involves determining the precise time, the positions and motions of celestial bodies, and motions of the earth. It also provides astronomical and timing data, and performs other functions as necessary.
