Located in the mostly-flat Great Plains of the Midwestern state of Kansas, Sedgwick County has a long history of innovation, especially in the area of aviation. The county was founded in 1867 and is named for a Civil War General, John Sedgwick. The county seat and largest city is Wichita.
The Sedgwick County Zoo, located in Wichita, opened in 1071 and is one of the top tourist destinations in Kansas. It has received national and international acclaim for its work with rare and endangered species and conservation programs. It is home to such critically endangered animals as the Amur Leopard.
Another big draw to the area is the Sedgwick County Fair. The fair has been held in Cheney since 1940. The fairgrounds cover 20 acres and attractions include a demolition derby, bull riding, live performances, contests, food vendors, amusements, and more.
With its long history, Sedgwick County is home to many historic sites. The Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum, established in 1939, houses local history exhibits. The museum is located in the Old Wichita City Hall building, which was built in 1890 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Wichita, a beautiful city swathed in Americana, is an affordable city often listed on “best” lists. It is home to museums, parks, restaurants, nightclubs, and shops. It is the location of Wichita State University, a top-ranking university established in 1895. The Wichita River Festival, one of the longest-running festivals in the state, includes a flea market, events, activities, live entertainment, block parties, and fireworks.
Other cities in Sedgwick County include Derby, Bel Aire, Haysville, and Park City. Townships include Grant, Kechi, Afton, Delano, Erie, and Lincoln.
