Fulton County, Georgia
As one of the five core counties that make up the Atlanta metro area, Fulton County is the largest and one of the most diverse. Fulton County formed in 1853 and was carved from the existing DeKalb County. The state capital, Atlanta, is the county seat.
Atlanta is a beautiful city with a fascinating history. First called Terminus, the first settlement developed during the building of the Western and Atlantic Railroad in the late 1830s. The name was changed to Marthasville in 1842, and finally became Atlanta in 1847. Atlanta played a major role in the Civil War. Its railroads provided an excellent way to distribute military supplies, making it a target for Union forces. Battles included Peachtree Creek, the Battle of Atlanta, and Kennesaw Mountain. Much of the city was burned by Sherman’s troops, and much of the city had to be rebuilt during the Reconstruction era.
During the 1920s, the city constructed an elevated street system to improve traffic flow. Businesses moved to the second floor to be street level, and the old store fronts are now part of Underground Atlanta, a fascinating collection of stores and restaurants. Because the “old” city was abandoned for decades, this historic site still features original storefronts with decorative brickwork, hand-carved wood posts, and granite archways. Underground Atlanta is just one of nearly 200 Fulton County locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Fulton County is home to several major businesses, including the Coca Cola Company, Cox Enterprises, Earthlink, Newell Rubbermaid, UPS, Georgia-Pacific, Chick-fil-A, Delta Airlines, and Northside Hospital. The prestigious Georgia Institute of Technology is also located in Fulton County.
In addition to Atlanta, Fulton County includes Roswell, Sandy Springs, Johns Creek, Hapeville, Alpharetta, Union City, East Point, and Milton.
