Southwest Jacksonville Neighborhood

The Southwest community of Jacksonville, Florida, lies west of St. John’s River and to the south of Interstate 10. Located 20 minutes from the ocean, in an area with lakes, coves and inlets, Southwest offers residents a variety of outdoor activities and indoor entertainment.

Metropolitan Park is located along St. John’s River on Gator Bowl Boulevard. The park is a top draw in the area, offering a 2,400-square-foot stage, playgrounds, picnic shelters, and boat docks. It is home to the Jacksonville Jazz Festival, the World of Nations Celebration, and the Jacksonville Spring Music Festival, among other events. Bands that have played the stage include Faith Hill, Collective Soul, and Crosby, Stills, and Nash. The park can accommodate up to 10,000 guests, and frequently tests those limits with its continuous activities and events.

The Mandarin Museum and Historical Society features the history and beginnings of the Mandarin neighborhood of Jacksonville. The museum showcases the rich citrus farming heritage of the community, and its importance in the Civil War, including the sinking of a Union steamship off Mandarin Point.

Area children attend Central Riverside School, St. Paul’s Catholic School, Stanton College Preparatory, and Andrew Jackson Senior High School. Most of Southwest is lined with sidewalks shaded by mature oaks, providing a pleasant walk to school.

Southwest is a popular place to live because it is located in an active part of the city, with easy access to downtown as well as outlying suburbs, and a rich variety of activities and amenities.
