Riverside at a Glance
Downtown Riverside Neighborhood
Riverside is a part of the famous Inland Empire of Southern California. It is a sprawling city that lies next to the Santa Ana River. Founded in the late 1870s by John W. North, Riverside quickly became a prosperous citrus grower’s hub. The prosperity allowed the first polo fields and golf course in Southern California to be established. The city is surrounded by and dotted with hills, some of which are high enough to get winter snows and to provide panoramic views of the Inland Empire. The San Gabriel mountains are the most prominent mountains in the area.
Riverside reflects California’s rich Spanish origins and subsequent diversity of settlers and cultures. The city is only 60 miles from Los Angeles and the Pacific ocean, making the city an important link to the widely diverse film, cultural, military, intellectual, agricultural, and scientific communities that abound in California.
Downtown Riverside is in the 92501 zip code and is bounded by the Santa Ana River Regional Park to the east, the Pomona Freeway to the northeast and Evans Park to the south. Old Downtown Riverside goes from 3rd Street to 14th Street. As a well-maintained city center, Downtown Riverside has apartments and detached homes that reflect the different eras of development and growth, while allowing walking access to the best of cultural, dining and entertainment venues.
The downtown businesses reflect the Hispanic and American cultures and serve a clientele as diverse as academics from the University of California at Riverside, personnel from March Air Reserve base, and visitors from the Los Angeles region.
Getting around is easy since Downtown Riverside has a Metrolink train station with transportation to Los Angeles. There is also easy access to Interstate Highway 215 and Highway 60, which is the Pomona Freeway.
