La Sierra Neighborhood

La Sierra is a fully-equipped neighborhood in Riverside’s west side. It has a high school, university, Metrolink train station, shopping centers, a hospital, and parks. Like so many communities in Riverside, it is located near several rocky hills and ridges.

The community is bound by Riverside Freeway (91 Freeway) to the south, Hole Avenue and Tyler Street to the west, Wells Avenue and Gramercy Place to the north, and portions of Buchanan Avenue and Norco Ridge to the west.

Due to its location, La Sierra sits in a valley below its elevated neighbors, Norco Ridge Ranch to the west and La Sierra Hills to the north. Despite this locale, the community’s terrain is flat and wide, making it a good place to establish residential streets, retail zones, and other institutions important to Riverside.

Riverwalk Parkway, La Sierra Avenue, Magnolia Avenue, and 91 Freeway are its main roads. Riverwalk runs along the base of Norco Ridge while the other thoroughfares connect much of Riverside to this community. The 91 stretches to San Bernardino to the east, and Orange County and the South Bay cities of Los Angeles County to the west.

Another form of mass transit can be found near La Sierra Avenue and the 91.The train station Riverside-La Sierra Metrolink is part of a passenger train system that connects Riverside with Los Angeles.

In the middle of this community off of Riverwalk is La Sierra University, a liberal arts institution associated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church. It offers bachelors, masters, and doctorial degree programs to nearly 2,000 students.

La Sierra Avenue connects several key facilities. La Sierra High School, Five Points Shopping Center, Westgate Shopping Center, and La Sierra Park are found here.

Magnolia Avenue has Kaiser Permanente Riverside Medical Center, and Riverside’s largest mall, Galleria at Tyler.
