In 1930s Hollywood, there was a need for gracious homes with the usual amenities-large rooms for entertaining, fireplaces, powder rooms, kitchens with service porches and separate entrances, bedrooms tucked away on an upper floor-but which could be occupied on a temporary basis. Unlike their traditional counterparts, these homes needed to be in a close-in location and unencumbered by unused rooms, extensive grounds and live-in staff. The Hollywood Maisonette was born.
