Spenard Neighborhood

Spenard is a unique, urban neighborhood located north of Spenard Lake in Anchorage, Alaska. Residents are artsy, creative individuals who enjoy free spirited lifestyles allowing them to indulge in their personal crafts, whether it is as artists, writers or craftsmen. This is the type of community that gathers for poetry readings, art and wine festivals and playful, interactive adventures, a wonderful neighborhood that welcomes and appreciates life, people and nature.

The setting in Spenard is quite spectacular with its tall, burly, evergreen pine trees that seem to reach halfway to the sky. Roads and dirt paths are carpeted in needles and snow throughout various seasons of the year. Multiple species of evergreens provide rich contrast and dimension to the neighborhood of Spenard, Alaska. Spruce, hemlock and birch trees intermingle with each other, creating diverse natural habitats for wild animals that live among them.

Spenard is a short distance inland from the southern tip of Knik Arm on the Alaskan peninsula. It is located in the southern portion of Anchorage, and is a popular area because of its artistic, community flair. Earthquake Park is barely three miles from Spenard. Earthquake Park is one of Alaska’s most amazing historical places, noted for being the site where massive amounts of land were rocked by a 9.2 earthquake in 1964. Consequently, huge portions of land literally slid into the water.

Lake Spenard is a rural area where boats and floatplanes, used to fly throughout Alaska’s wilderness, are harbored. Spenard residents enjoy gorgeous sightseeing expeditions by boat throughout the magnificent fjords in the area. Other things to do in Spenard include visiting the Heritage Museum and enjoying spectator sports – especially hockey, at the Sullivan Arena.
