The South Addition neighborhood is located in the southern portion of downtown Anchorage, Alaska. This zip code for this Anchorage County community is 99501. On the south, this neighborhood extends roughly to Chester Creek Trail, including most of the Westchester Lagoon. On the west, it extends roughly to the railroad tracks and Bootlegger Cove. Much of its northern boundary is defined by West Ninth Avenue, but on the west it extends to a point near West Second Avenue. On the east it is bounded by Cordova Street and C Street.
South Addition is largely residential, home to roughly 4,560 residents. It spans nearly two square miles. Most of the single-family homes here were built between 1940 and 1990, but some date back prior to 1940, making it one of the city’s older neighborhoods. Residents of this neighborhood could be considered quite affluent, even by the city’s high-income standards. In 2008, residents of South Addition earned a median household income of $80,710, higher even than the city average of $75,637 for the same year.
Nestled near the heart of the downtown area, South Addition offers residents plenty to see and do. In addition to residences, several markets, eateries and lodging options found within neighborhood bounds, plenty of cultural attractions and entertainment options are within walking distance north of the neighborhood. Among the attractions here are the Anchorage City Hall, Dena’Ian Civic and Convention Center, Alaska Center – Performing Arts, Anchorage Museum, Historic Anchorage, and the Zumiez Fifth Avenue Mall.
All that separates South Addition residents from all of these amenities is the Delaney Park Strip, an 11-block city park. Named for one of the city’s first mayors, Delaney Park is the oldest park in Anchorage. Today, the park features a long list of amenities and facilities, including several memorials, the Centennial Rose Garden, ice skating area and ice hockey rink, fitness center, winter running route, softball and soccer fields, volleyball courts, and eight tennis courts.
