The North Star neighborhood in Anchorage is a park lover’s dream. Westchester Lagoon Park and the Chester Creek Greenbelt frame the northern end of the district. The Chester Creek Trail, a six mile stretch of the legs from the lagoon to Russian Jack Spring Park, takes you around ponds, over wooden bridges and through large grassy meadows. If you prefer indoor sports, the Dempsey –Anderson Ice Arena offers ice skating and hockey lessons. Children and adults are both welcome.
Another large open space is the Valley of the Moon Park, featuring a baseball/softball field, picnic area, playgrounds and a multi-purpose grassy field. This park is also home to a community garden where you can join your neighbors in exercising your green thumb.
West High School, located on Hillcrest Drive, also opens its pool for public use on a seasonal basis. All of this in a neighborhood that is just a few minutes south of downtown Anchorage.
Aside from West High School, other schools in the area include North Star Elementary School on Fireweed Lane and Romig Middle School on Minnesota Drive. The Catholic Rosary Academy is at West Fireweed Lane and Spenard Road on the southwestern edge of the district. The People Mover Bus service in North Star is extensive with routes along Spenard Road, Minnesota Drive, Arctic Boulevard and Fireweed Lane. Largely residential, North Star is home to Barnes & Noble Booksellers, a large Fred Meyer Pharmacy and the Embassy Suites Anchorage, all on the south eastern end off of East Northern Lights Boulevard.
