Downtown Neighborhood
The small Downtown neighborhood of Blacksburg, Virginia is rich in history. Situated next door to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in the 24060 ZIP code area, Downtown offers many options for things to do, including a number of annual events. First Fridays, Summer Solstice Fest, Art at the Market and the Steppin’ Out Festival are just some of the events residents can attend in Downtown. Neighborhood businesses offer Senior discount Tuesdays.
Downtown is the location of Blacksburg’s Montgomery Floyd Regional Library, the Main Street Post Office and the “sixteen squares.” Bounded by Draper Road, Jackson Street, Clay Street and Wharton Street, the sixteen block area is the original site where Blacksburg was first established as a town in the late 1700s. Many of the buildings in this part of the neighborhood date back over one hundred years, and some are as old as 200 years.
Aside from the sixteen squares, points of interest in the Downtown neighborhood include several art galleries, museums and historic churches, including the 150 year-old Christ Episcopal Church. Downtown is close to a number of attractions and recreation options including a skate park, Blacksburg Community Center, Blacksburg Aquatics Center and Blacksburg Municipal Park. A number of state parks are a short drive away as well.
Those seeking apartments or other rentals close to Virginia Tech will find a variety of options in and around the neighborhood. Downtown sidewalks are off limits to skating, skateboards and bicycles. Montgomery Regional Hospital is three miles from Downtown.
