West Dallas Neighborhood

West Dallas is a sprawling area encompassing many smaller communities and neighborhoods on the west side of Dallas. The community of West Dallas was founded in 1886 as a small neighborhood on the outskirts of Dallas. In 1909 the Thomas A. Edison School was built in the area. The region was a slum during the depression years, and it is said the infamous Bonnie and Clyde were originally from West Dallas. In 1954, the area was annexed by the City of Dallas.

Thanks to extensive renovation of West Dallas neighborhoods and the elimination of heavy concentrations of lead, the area is more prosperous now than it was at the turn of the century. Trendy restaurants and upscale shopping venues are scattered throughout the area, and residents can enjoy theatrical productions held at El Centro College.

West Dallas includes zip code 75212 and encompasses the area bordered by the Trinity River on the east and north, the Trinity River’s West Fork on the west, and Interstate 30 on the south. DART is available for transport to the Dallas Zoo, and there are many parks in the region Just to the east lies the Historic District, where residents can visit the Dallas Aquarium, Symphony Center, Dallas Convention Center or the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza.

Residents of West Dallas can appreciate the view of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge from its location in the Trinity River Corridor; the Trinity Overlook Park and adjacent Trinity Audubon Center offer recreational outlets. Wealthier members of the West Dallas Community belong to the exclusive Stevens Park Golf Course to the south in Kessler Park.
