Dallas County, Texas

Just the name “Dallas County, Texas” conjures up images of cowboy boots and ten-gallon hats, cactus and cattle. But exactly who was this man named Dallas? Was he a rancher? Did he fight at the Alamo? Was he related to JR Ewing?

The answer is none of the above. Not only was George Mifflin Dallas not a rancher, he was not even a Texan. Of Scottish ancestry, Dallas was a US Senator from Pennsylvania and the 11th Vice President of the United States under President James K. Polk.

Dallas graduated from what is now Princeton University with honors and studied law. After the War of 1812 he led the Democrat “Family party” to defeat the (also Democrat) “Amalgamators,” headed by the future President James Buchanan, and became the mayor of Philadelphia. He served as attorney general of Pennsylvania, was a Grand Master of Freemasons and was even tapped for the elegant title, “Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Russia.” Dallas was elected VP on the Democratic ticket in 1844.

Clearly a popular man, his name graces other counties such as Dallas County, Iowa and Dallas County, Missouri, as well as cities and towns elsewhere such as Dallas, Georgia; Dallas, North Carolina; Dallas, Oregon and Dallastown, Pennsylvania.

Dallas County, Texas has, according to the 2010 census, a population of 2,368,139 and is the ninth most populous county in the United States. The city of Dallas is its county seat and the largest city in the county.

Not counting the Ewing family, the median income for a family in the county is $49,062.

Transportation options in Dallas County include Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Dallas Area Rapid Transit which serves many cities in Dallas County, and the Trinity Railway Express.
