Downtown Nashville Neighborhood

Downtown Nashville is famous as the home of the Country Music Hall, RCA Studio B, the Johnny Cash Museum, and Honky-Tonk Highway. But there are also terrific art galleries, historic buildings, and fantastic restaurants to enjoy. If you are moving to Downtown Nashville, there are several small downtown neighborhoods to explore.

One of those neighborhoods, Capitol Hill, is literally Nashville’s vital center. Capitol Hill is the city’s vibrant, growing district featuring easy access to everything from stylish high-rise apartments to hidden honky-tonk nightclubs. For many in the city, their day begins and their night ends downtown near Capitol Hill.

Standing out among the many local enterprises and eateries in the Capitol Hill area are the historic buildings that house the heart of the state government. The Tennessee State Capitol building, modeled after ancient Greek architecture, sits atop a lavishly landscaped hill and is surrounded by the State Supreme Court building and library and the War Memorial building. It is home of the state’s legislature and other vital facets of the government.

Opportunities for self-improvement are offered nearby, as the Tennessee State University’s downtown campus is a brief walk from the Capitol, with its focus on nighttime classes and non-traditional college students. For the younger learners, Capitol Hill is minutes away from Hume-Fogg Magnet School, an institution nationally recognized for high achievement in education. Hume-Fogg regularly sends students off to work on an Ivy League education. Also within walking distance is the city’s magnificent public library’s main location. This sprawling, four-story library has been recognized nationally for its beauty and its collections.

When the students and employees head home for the evening, downtown near Capitol Hill turns into a raucous entertainment district. The historic Ryman Auditorium is the area’s most famous entertainment landmark. It’s the former home of the Grand Old Opry, a country music staple, but today often receives concerts from top entertainers from all genres. Also offering big-ticket live performances is the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, which regularly features everything from touring performances of Broadway productions to big-name stand-up comics.

Another terrific neighborhood to consider as you search for apartments in Downtown Nashville is Academy Square. This historic neighborhood is home to the Howard School, built in the 1890s. The structure has housed Davidson County government offices since the 1970s. Another must-see in the neighborhood is the Nashville Children’s Theatre, formed in 1931.
