North Oakland Neighborhood

The North Oakland Neighborhood is in the 15213 zip-code area of the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and is at the epicenter of the city’s educational and cultural explosion. Many colleges, museums, and an art center fill out the neighborhood as the contributions of Carnegie, Mellon, and Rooney are apparent in the namesake of their contribution of education, study, and sports.

The northern border for this teardrop-shaped neighborhood comes to a point as the Bloomfield Bridge crosses over East Busway, which takes over as the eastern line. North Neville Street covers the gap until the southern line takes up with Schenley Road. The western line follows South Bouquet Street before being muddled by the University of Pittsburgh, and comes to completion along Bigelow Boulevard.

Dan Marino found his childhood dream playing pick-up games in the shadow of the rising icon status of the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 1970s. He broke so many records at the University of Pittsburgh as a quarterback that the school retired Dan Marino’s jersey number in 1982.

Above the North Oakland neighborhood is Highland Park, the home of the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium, one of only six Zoo-Aquarium combinations in the country. To the east is Chatham University, a women’s college with coeducational graduate programs. To the south is Forbes Field, the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates until 1971. To the west of the neighborhood across the river is the Andy Warhol Museum.

The North Oakland neighborhood is well suited for pedestrian travel with neighborhood sidewalks as well as the campus trails designed for heavy foot traffic. The Port Authority operates the bus and light rail services that open up all points of the city from the neighborhood. The parks and campus atmosphere makes bike lanes more popular in this neighborhood than others in the Pittsburgh metro area.
