Mt Oliver Neighborhood

The Mount Oliver Neighborhood is in the 15210 zip-code area of Alleghany County, Pennsylvania and is less than two miles from the banks of the Monongahela River. The Mount Oliver 1910 census showed it had just over 4,500 residents, but rose to nearly 7,000 by the year 2000. Since then, it has settled back down to 3,900 locals.

This neighborhood has a northern border of Parkwood Road that only carries it a short stint before meeting up with the eastern line of Mountain Avenue. The southern boundary slowly creeps up Wagner Street, stopping before it becomes Walter Avenue, and turning to make Otillia Street the western border that completes the neighborhood. The community has, as one of its focal points, a charming clock tower.

To the north of Mount Oliver is the South Side Works, one of the many reclaimed industrial sites of the past that now hosts shops, parks, restaurants, and theater. To the east is the Kennywood Amusement Park, originally opened as a trolly park and since having gone through numerous changes to become a modern player in the amusement industry.

To the south, for shopping there is the Century Square and the Century III Mall, both have ample parking and “out of the way” locations that avoid crowds. The setting sun in the west illuminates Mount Lebanon Municipal Golf, a long 9-hole course at 3,074 yards, set for a par 35. The course opened to the public in 1907.

The Mount Oliver neighborhood has a park feel to its presence, as the rows of houses sit on long stretches of green grass, punctuated by large trees. The blocks are circled by pedestrian walkways as the lush environment urges travelers to hurry to the next field. This neighborhood also requires cyclists to share the roadways with vehicle traffic, yet does have a few bike lanes along the northern roads.
