Pittsburgh at a Glance
East Allegheny Neighborhood
East Allegheny is one of the most historically significant and culturally vibrant communities in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Known as Deutschtown, the name is derived from the area’s high number of German immigrants when founded in the late 19th century. Revitalization efforts since the 1970s helped East Allegheny become a most desirable neighborhood in Pittsburgh. It’s a family-friendly area with quaint charm and a small-town feel, while being near downtown Pittsburgh.
East Allegheny is part of the 15212 ZIP code and Pittsburgh’s City Council District 1. It is on the northern side of the Allegheny River, directly across from downtown Pittsburgh. Its borders are Goehring Street and North Avenue to the north, Canal Street to the south, Cedar Avenue and Compromise Avenue to the west, and Vinial Street and Arcola Way to the east.
Walking in East Allegheny transports visitors and residents to Pittsburgh’s historic past. The landscape is dominated by stone and brick, from the historic row houses that line the streets to the many shops and restaurants. The streets are lined with trees and have wide sidewalks. The local historical society provides walking tours of the neighborhood for residents and guests who want to learn more about East Allegheny’s development and its historic buildings.
The majority of commercial development is along East Ohio Street between James Street and Nash Street. One of the charming historical spots in this section of East Allegheny is Photo Antiquities, which is one of the largest photography museums in the United States. Visitors can see old cameras and pictures of Pittsburgh and the neighborhood dating back to the city’s founding. East Commons Park provides residents with a place to relax and enjoy the scenery. It also hosts a popular weekly Farmer’s Market, letting local residents taste farm-fresh produce, meats and dairy products from farms in the countryside surrounding Pittsburgh.
