Boston University - Boston, MA
Boston College is a private Jesuit research university located in the village of Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Founded by the Society of Jesus in 1863, the school opened its doors with 3 teachers and 22 students. For its first 70 years, Boston College remained a small undergraduate institution, serving the sons of the Irish working class, and teaching theology and philosophy, Greek and Latin classics, and English and modern languages. Today the school is categorized as an RU/H: Research Universities, meaning a university with high research activity, in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
The school’s main campus is in Chestnut Hill, just six miles west of downtown Boston. The 175-acre campus includes over 120 buildings and features some of the earliest examples of collegiate gothic architecture in North America. The sprawling campus, set on a hilltop overlooking the Chestnut Hill Reservoir, is known as “the Heights,” and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The “Boston College” streetcar station on metropolitan Boston’s public transit system is located at St. Ignatius Gate. Green Line’s B-branch, also known as the “Boston College” line, connects the school to Boston’s city center.
Boston College enrolls 9,200 full-time undergraduates and 4,000 graduate students. It is a member of the 568 Group and the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities.
Boston College offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees through its nine schools and colleges. It is currently ranked 31 in the National Universities ranking by US News and World Report, and is ranked 16th on the Forbes.com 2009 edition of “America’s Best Colleges.”
