Georgetown University - Washington, DC
Georgetown University is the oldest Catholic university in the United States. It is a private Jesuit research institution, founded in 1789, in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC.
Its founding realized efforts dating all the way from 1634. Georgetown celebrates its religious heritage, which has included Jesuit involvement since 1805, but has always been governed independently of the church.
During the Civil War, the student body dropped from 313 to 17. To celebrate the end of the Civil War, Georgetown students selected the colors blue and gray as the school’s official colors in 1876.
Today the university has grown to be one of the world’s leading research institutions with eight schools, an affiliated hospital and a number of highly-ranked academic programs. The school offers 180 academic programs in four undergraduate and three graduate and professional schools. More than 12,000 students attend class at five locations: Main Campus, Medical Center, Law Center, GU-Northern Virginia and the university’s School of Foreign Service-Qatar.
Georgetown University boasts an impressive number of famous attorneys, politicians and heads of state including Crown Prince Felipe of Spain, King Abdullah II of Jordan, President Bill Clinton, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin and Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.
Other notable alumni include singer Pearl Bailey; early film actor John Barrymore; founder of publication empire Condé Montrose Nast; actor, director and producer Carl Reiner; NBC news commentator and former First Lady of California Maria Shriver; Fox News anchor Greta Van Susteren and four-time director of Harry Potter films, David Yates.
