New York at a Glance
Tribeca Neighborhood
Tribeca, sometimes spelled TriBeCa, is a neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, New York, known as one of the nation’s most fashionable neighborhoods and home to a number of celebrities. Forbes magazine ranked Tribeca as New York City’s most expensive neighborhood.
The name Tribeca is an acronym of the words “Triangle below Canal Street.” The area’s boundaries are Canal Street, West Street, Broadway and Vesey Street. The neighborhood is home of the Tribeca Film Festival.
Founded in 2002 by Jane Rosenthal, Robert De Niro and Craig Hatkoff in response to the affects the September 11 attacks had on the Tribeca neighborhood, the festival’s mission is “to enable the international film community and the general public to experience the power of film by redefining the film festival experience” by celebrating New York City as a major filmmaking center and contributing to the recovery of the area.
The Festival’s program line-up includes documentaries, narrative features, shorts and family-friendly films. Panel discussions feature personalities in the entertainment world, and renowned artists provide original works of art that are awarded to the winners.
The festival now draws an estimated three million people, including the biggest names in art, film, and music industries, and generates $600 million annually. In 2009, Rosenthal, Hatkoff and De Niro were named number 14 on Barron’s list of the world’s top 25 philanthropists for their role in regenerating Tribeca’s economy after September 11.
The area was among the first neighborhoods developed beyond the boundaries of the city during colonial times. By the mid-19th century the area was transformed from residential into a business and industrial center; but by the 1960s, that industrial base had vanished. The resulting number of empty commercial spaces attracted artists to the area, seeking affordable studio space. This in turn led to the neighborhood’s regentrification, and since the 1980s Tribeca has been considered an upscale residential area.
Notable residents of Tribeca have included Billy Crystal, Leonardo DiCaprio, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and John F. Kennedy, Jr., David Letterman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kelly Ripa, Meryl Streep, Uma Thurman, Justin Timberlake and Kate Winslet.
