Gramercy Park Neighborhood

Those looking for a quiet, safe area in New York City – and one with stable real estate – should consider the neighborhood of Gramercy Park, in the borough of Manhattan. Although it won’t come cheap, a home in the area will certainly bring its owner a certain amount of cache; east 19th Street between Third Avenue and Irving is nicknamed “block beautiful” for its interesting architecture and manicured beauty.

This historic neighborhood is built around its namesake, Gramercy Park; a small, fenced-in private park covering approximately two acres, it’s one of only two private parks in New York City. Only people residing around the park who pay an annual fee have a key, and the public is not generally allowed inside.

A well-known landmark in Gramercy Park is the Players Club, founded by Edwin Booth. Members of the Players included prominent bankers, lawyers and businessmen, as well as those identified with other arts – writers, journalists, sculptors, architects and painters. Presidents of the club have included Jose Ferrer and Lynn Redgrave. Some past and present notable members include Samuel Clemens, John Barrymore, Eugene O’Neill, James Cagney, Gregory Peck, Kevin Spacey, Angela Lansbury, Sidney Poitier, Tony Bennett, Jimmy Fallon and Peter O’Toole.

The Players Club is a social club; but it’s also a repository of American and British theatre history, memorabilia, and theatrical artifacts. Portraits of theatre and film notables and rare playbills from the 19th and 20th centuries hang in the dining room, and a small stage has been built where new works are tried out.

The main thoroughfare of the neighborhood south of the park is Irving Place. Pete’s Tavern, New York’s oldest surviving saloon and where O. Henry wrote The Gift of the Magi, survived Prohibition disguised as a flower shop.
