Las Vegas at a Glance
Winchester Neighborhood
Winchester is a 4.3-square-mile urban gateway that separates the fabulous Las Vegas Strip from its municipal namesake, the city of Las Vegas. It was created during a tax and annexation feud between Las Vegas City and property owners across the city line in Clark County.
The neighborhood is a multi-purpose township situated centrally in the Las Vegas Metropolitan megalopolis. It’s home to some of the grandest residential neighborhoods in Clark County. It boasts four major, well-known casinos, including the Las Vegas Hilton, Circus Circus, the Sahara, and the Rivera. Shopping centers, the private Las Vegas Country Club, and the Las Vegas Convention Center, which annually hosts events like the Consumer Electronics Show and National Association of Broadcasters convention, are here, too.
Although many falsely believe Bugsy Siegel and the Tropicana started the notorious Las Vegas Strip, its first casino was really the El Rancho Vegas which, until it burned to the ground, was located at the intersection of East Sahara Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard South, the present Winchester/Las Vegas City border. This intersection is the northern beginning of the Strip which runs south about 4.5 miles.
In addition to the tourist-enticing casinos, Winchester is home to the huge pink Adventure Dome Theme Park attached to Circus Circus. It boasts an indoor roller coaster and other family attractions.
The Winchester Cultural Center on McLeod Drive in eastern Winchester offers different events throughout the year including films, live drama, storytelling, dance events, classes, workshops and exhibitions. The center is also home to local artists who display their works.
Most of the residential neighborhoods in eastern Winchester are suburban middle class. However, homes in the gated communities around the Las Vegas Country Club cost in the millions and are some of the most palatial in the metropolitan area.
Nearly all public areas of Winchester are accessible by cab and bus. The Las Vegas Monorail, a seven-stop elevated train covering a 3.9 mile loop around the Las Vegas Strip, has three stations in Winchester, including the Las Vegas Convention Center Station, Las Vegas Hilton Station, and the Sahara Station.
