Skinker DeBaliviere may owe its existence as a vibrant Saint Louis, Missouri, neighborhood to the St. Louis World’s Fair, but the location of the area makes it a great place to live. Skinker DeBaliviere is within walking distance of Forest Park which is home to the St. Louis Zoo, two museums, the Muny (an outdoor auditorium) and an excellent park with walking/running paths and great places to hold a picnic. It is also close to Washington University and the University Loop. The Delmar MetroLink station makes travel around the area simple.
Recently, the Delmar Loop has expanded into the Skinker DeBaliviere neighborhood. Delmar Loop is a six-block long entertainment, cultural and restaurant district. It is one of the main venues for musical groups coming to St. Louis. Delmar Loop also offers a community music school and classes in pottery and other arts. The Loop has seemingly endless dining and shopping possibilities.
Skinker DeBaliviere, established around 1908, offers choices in housing. Not the typical cookie-cutter neighborhood, it offers something old, something new, and something to rent and something to own. As an historic district, many of the homes were built near the turn of the twentieth century and reflect an era gone by. The area also features newer homes, including single-family or multi-family houses as well as apartment buildings.
The area city council and resident volunteers work to keep the area a great place to live. The community council actively seeks ways to bring the community together by planning events that everyone can enjoy. The neighborhood also has a community garden space, the McPherson Community Garden, where residents can plant their own food.
