Clayton-Tamm Neighborhood
Named for the intersection of two streets, the Clayton-Tamm neighborhood is part of the old Dogtown area of St. Louis. The district was a coal miners’ settlement until the city reclaimed some of the land. Urban legend says that when the miners were evicted from what is now Forest Park they built a community of squatter’s shacks and protected their enclave with a multitude of dogs. No one knows, but the name lingers.
The zip code for the Clayton-Tamm area is 63110. It is located just south of the zoo area of lovely Forest Park, one of America’s most beautiful city parks. On the north, the boundary of Clayton-Tamm is I-64. On the east, Hampton Avenue bounds the neighborhood. On the southwest, the boundary street is Dale Avenue, and on the west the boundary is Louisville Avenue.
Many of the homes of the neighborhood are older brick bungalows with welcoming porches, set behind small lawns. Many homes have quirky Craftsman or Deco touches, while some have been covered in siding and had aluminum awnings added.
Some streets are lined with rows of two-family or four-family buildings, and there are also areas of larger apartment buildings faced in brick or masonry. The neighborhood is tidy and well-kept, and many of its blocks feature mature street trees.
Forest Park offers museums, gardens, exhibits, and quiet paths. A Shakespeare Festival and a Wine Festival are held yearly beneath its trees. In Clayton-Tamm itself, one popular festival is the parade held each year on St. Patrick’s Day.
