Minneapolis at a Glance
Downtown Neighborhood
Downtown Minneapolis is the urban core of the city. This large area is dynamic, diverse, and unique. To really understand Downtown Minneapolis and find the right area for you, consider the sections of Downtown: Central, East, and West.
Central is located just outside of Downtown. Being close to the downtown area of Minneapolis makes it easy for residents of Central to commute for work or visit one of the numerous attractions. Homes here are typically older, standing as a proud testament to the history of the region. Central is near Powderhorn Lake Park, one of the largest parks in the neighborhood. The park hosts a variety of annual events, including the 4th of July celebration and the May Day Festival. Midtown Global Market is located in Central. This popular market features a wide variety of stores and restaurants and is a terrific place to visit from anywhere in Downtown Minneapolis.
Downtown West is hip and modern – quite a bit different from the largely historic downtown. a large area in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The area around Downtown West is filled with options for entertainment, cultural, recreation, shopping, and more. There are numerous small retail shops, art exhibits, and restaurants located along virtually every road featuring a wide assortment of goods, services, and foods to please most anyone.
The Minneapolis Convention Center is a major downtown venue that brings tourists to the downtown area. It hosts many major conventions, home shows, garden shows, bridal shows, and consumer shows. The Minnesota Orchestra is another popular downtown attraction.
Downtown East is rich with history. This is the location of the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, home to the Minnesota Vikings football team and formerly to the Minnesota Twins baseball team. Beginning with the 2010 season, the Minnesota Twins moved to the newly built Target Field.
Downtown East contains the Mills District. From 1880 to 1930, Minneapolis was known as the flour milling capital of the world, and more informally as the “Mill City.” After World War I, the milling industry in Minneapolis declined. Today, many of these old mills and industrial properties still stand and many have been converted to apartments and lofts.
The Mill City Museum was built here on the Mississippi River on the ruins of the world’s largest flour mill, the Washburn A Mill, which closed in 1965 and was nearly destroyed by fire in 1991. Here, visitors can learn about the history of the flour industry and the city of Minneapolis.Mill Ruins Park is an educational and historically significant park in Downtown East. The park contains ruins of several flour mills and industrial buildings in addition to those of the Minneapolis Eastern Railroad. Walkways through the park interpret the ruins for visitors and educate on the history of the area. For theater enthusiasts, Guthrie Theater is located in Downtown East on South 2nd Street. This is a center for performance, production, education, and professional training. The theater, called a “21st century dream factory” by Time Magazine, boasts three stages, a full-service dining experience, multiple bars, and some of the most magnificent views in Minneapolis.
