Fort Lee Military Reservation Petersburg, VA

Located between Petersburg and Hopewell, Fort Lee can be traced back to colonial times, when the area was dotted with plantations along the James River. Revolutionary War battles were fought in and around the present-day fort, as well as Civil War battles. But it wasn’t until 1917 and the beginning of WWI that a permanent military base was established and named Camp Lee. The base was eventually abandoned, with just one house from that time period, the Davis House, left standing. Camp Lee was rebuilt in 1940 and the beginning of WWII.

Today, Fort Lee is an important location, home to the Sustainment Center of Excellence, a training center that welcomes 70,000 troops every year. Fort Lee trains 35 percent of the Army recruits, making it the Army’s third largest training organization. There are two museums located on the base – the Army Quartermaster Museum and the Army Women’s Museum.

There are several nearby communities to consider when searching for a Fort Lee area apartment. Hopewell is located on the northeastern edge of the base, while Prince George is on the southeastern end. Petersburg and Colonial Heights are west of the base. Fort Lee is roughly 25 miles south of Richmond and about 90 miles northwest of Virginia Beach.
