Located an easy, 30-minute drive west of the Atlantic Ocean and 15 minutes south of the border to South Carolina, Abercorn Heights/Lamara Heights is a neighborhood in Savannah, Georgia. Community boundaries are East DeRenne Avenue, Bull Street, East Sixty-First Street, and Paulsen Street. Candler Hospital and Habersham Shopping Center are part of the neighborhood. Hunter Army Airfield lies three miles south.
The Abercorn Heights/Lamara Heights neighborhood is surrounded by interesting attractions, providing residents with a variety of activities. Ghost Talk Ghost Walk, less than a mile west of the community, is a unique opportunity for residents to learn about local history through a guided tour of haunted places around the area. Nathaniel Greene Park and Hull Park are the closest parks. Bacon Park Golf Course and Hunter Golf Club are nearby public golf courses. The Mercer Williams House Museum, a 10-minute drive into downtown Savannah, contains furniture and art from the 17th through 19th centuries. The Savannah History Museum and the Telfair Art Museum, approximately three miles north, are excellent choices to visit on a rainy day. Movie buffs can attend Lucas Theater, the site of the Savannah Film Festival. The Carmike 10 movie theater complex is also close by.
Savannah State University, the closest public institution of higher learning, is located five miles to the east of Abercorn Heights/Lamara Heights. The Savannah-Chatham County Public School District serves the neighborhood with Jacob G. Smith Elementary School, DeRenne Middle School, and Jenkins High School.
Sidewalks line many of the streets in this pedestrian- and eco-friendly neighborhood, inviting residents to take an afternoon or evening stroll. Downtown Savannah can be reached by a 25-minute ride on the number 11 bus of the Chatham Area Transit system, or by a 15-minute drive north.
