In 1893, an English teacher at Colorado College, Katherine Lee Bates, decided to join a group of colleagues on a trip to the top of Pike’s Peak. The beauty she saw from the top of the mountain inspired her to write “America the Beautiful.” She wrote the poem entitled Pikes Peak in a journal she carried with her on the trip.
El Paso County, Colorado still embodies the beauty that inspired one of the country’s most beloved songs. From the soaring mountains in the west to the open prairie land in the east, this is still an area that inspires artists and poets.
