Denver at a Glance
Platt Park Neighborhood
Platt Park is a 17-acre park that was the heart of what was once the town of South Denver, a municipality that was absorbed into the city of Denver in the early part of the last century.
South Denver was created to restrict the building of more saloons or roadhouses. The town passed many new laws and ordinances to discourage any immoral behavior, even instilling a $2,500 fee for new liquor licenses, which at that time was an outrageous amount. The current neighborhood of Platt Park ranges from Downing Street to South Broadway Street from Mississippi Avenue and Evans Avenue.
James Flemming, an oil man from Pennsylvania, was the first and only mayor of South Denver. He built an estate in 1882 at Grant and Florida avenues and it still stands today. The estate once covered an entire block and incorporated an orchard called Fleming’s Grove. The city bought the property in 1891 and it was converted into the town hall, jail and library. The town of South Denver was annexed into Denver in 1894 and the Fleming Estate continued as the library until 1913, when it was replaced by the Decker Branch Library.
In 1974, Platt Park Senior Center was built between the town hall and the library. The Fleming mansion is now used as office space for non-profit groups. It has been designated as a Denver landmark.
When the Denver Tramway Company extended its line south along Pearl Street and east to Alameda, the surrounding communities like Platt Park began to thrive. Commercial development increased. Much of the architecture in the area is turn-of-the-century Victorian and houses from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.
During the Great Depression, many of the businesses in the neighborhood were forced to close. The low prices for the vacant buildings drew artisans and boutiques to the area and in 1978, Old South Pearl Merchant’s Association began to hold its annual street fair there. Efforts were made to improve the look of South Pearl Street, and old fashioned light posts and cobblestone streets were added.
These improvements, picturesque shops and the addition of the light rail have made Platt Park one of the most popular in Denver.
