Sierra Oaks is a wealthy, upscale area with excellent schools, just five miles from downtown Sacramento, California. It is east of Campus Commons and Sacramento University (California State University-Sacramento). The American River borders Sierra Oaks to the south.
The American River Bike Trail runs along the river on the south end of Sierra Oaks. This paved bike trail follows the river and leads into the American River Parkway, a 23 mile park system that offers rafting, boating, fishing, picnicking, and golfing opportunities. Nearby shopping includes the University Village Shopping Center and Lyon Village Shopping Center.
