Stretching from the outskirts of Sacramento to the border of Nevada, Placer County contains some of the most beautiful landscape in the country – Lake Tahoe and part of the Tahoe National Forest are located within the county. The popular resort area of Lake Tahoe contains everything from mountain inns to quaint bed and breakfasts. Activities include snowboarding, skiing, skating, sledding, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling, sleigh rides, dogsled tours, fishing, and boating.
With the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Lake Tahoe in its backyard and the busy city of Sacramento in the front, Placer County is one of the fastest-growing counties in California. Its county seat, Auburn, has long been attractive to newcomers, dating back to the California Gold Rush. Auburn is considered a suburb of Sacramento.
Outdoor enthusiasts, sports fans, and athletes enjoy Auburn and the surrounding area because of the many sporting activities. Many of those activities occur at the Auburn State Recreation Area, which plays host to such events as the Way Too Cool 50 Kilometer Endurance Run, the Auburn International Half-Ironman Triathlon, the Coolest 24-Hour Mountain Bike Race, the Western States Trail Ride, and the American River 50 Mile Endurance Run.
Placer County’s gorgeous setting makes it the place for outdoor adventurers to find their next apartment. Parks, ATV activities, water sports, winter sports, golfing, camping – or just enjoying the natural surroundings – Placer County offers it all and more. It is also a very pet-friendly region and many Lake Tahoe hotels, campgrounds, and inns are pet-friendly. Want to take your dog cross-country skiing or snowshoeing? The Tahoe Cross Country Ski Area, North Tahoe Regional Park, and Page Meadows all allow your pet to accompany you. And when you are finished with your snowy adventure, stop by one of the pet-friendly restaurants. In summer, pet-friendly beaches are also available.
Placer County has five cities, including Auburn. The others are Roseville, Lincoln, Colfax, and Rocklin. Loomis is a town in the county, and there are several unincorporated communities such as Baxter, Foresthill, Applegate, Newcastle, and Kings Beach.
