University/Research Park Neighborhood

The University/Research Park area of Huntsville, Alabama is a fairly new residential area. It is located in West Huntsville, extending from downtown Huntsville on either side of University Drive toward Vaughn Corners. It is directly north of Redstone Arsenal and includes the University of Alabama in Huntsville and Oakwood University. Madison Square Mall is also in the neighborhood.

One major draw to the area is the long, mostly-paved trail that extends throughout the area for joggers, walkers, and bicyclists. The trail heads through the heavy forest along the western edge of Providence and connects to Old Monrovia Road to the north, University Drive, and Old Mission Pike. Several communities can be found along the way making it possible to meet up with friends. Since most of the trail is through thick forest, it is possible to see wildlife including birds, deer, turtles, snakes, and more.

One of the largest shopping centers in the area, Westside Center, is located along University Drive NW. Westside Center is home to a variety of shops and restaurants, including Lane Bryant, Target, Steinmart, Men’s Warehouse, and more. It is also home to a Five Guys Burgers and Fries, IHOP, and Jason’s Deli.

Other restaurants in the area include Phil Sandoval’s Mexican Restaurant, Tokyo Japanese Steakhouse and O’Charley’s. Down the street, Madison Square Mall Shopping Center is a few miles to the east of Westside Center near the University of Alabama at Huntsville. There are dozens of bars, restaurants, and attractions for the young and young at heart in this area of town.
