Lower Queen Anne Neighborhood

Seattle’s Lower Queen Anne Hill is sometimes called “Uptown” due to its north-of-downtown location. This area is located at the base of Queen Anne Avenue, north of Belltown and Denny Avenue. At the north end of the neighborhood, Queen Anne Avenue ascends up a steep hill, known as the Counterbalance, because trolley cars that used the road had to turn around and go up the hill backwards. The urban village contains mainly high-rise apartments and condos, though some single-family homes remain.

The Seattle Center occupies a large portion of the land on Lower Queen Anne. The center is home to the Seattle Opera, Pacific Northwest Ballet, the Seattle Children’s Theater, Mercer Arena, Seattle Science Museum, Intiman Theater, Bagley Wright Theater, and the Center House. Home of the 1965 World’s Fair, the Center is also home of the Seattle Space Needle and the starting point for the Monorail, both constructed for the World’s Fair. Bumbershoot, a three day music festival held over Labor Day weekend, rings in the end of summer each year on the center’s many lawns and stages. The Center House also houses one of Seattle’s newest high schools, the Center School, which uses the surrounding area to enhance the curriculum.

Also at the center is the Key Arena. Once the home of the Seattle Supersonics, the venue continues to host ice, dance, political, and musical events. The arena is still the home of the women’s basketball team, the Seattle Storm, and a hockey team, the Seattle Thunderbirds.

The area’s central shopping district sits along Queen Anne Avenue, offering shops that cater to the both the downtown crowd and tourists. Fast food restaurants and coffee shops mix with bars and upscale restaurants.

Lower Queen Anne residents utilize the Seattle Metro bus system to commute downtown, though many also bike or take the monorail.
