Seattle at a Glance
Pike Place Market Neighborhood
Though not actually a district, the area around Pike Place Market is quite interesting. Located between Interstate 5 to the east, and US Highway 99 to the west, this neighborhood is rich in landmarks.
The Alaskan Way Viaduct runs nearby, north to south and to the west of the market. Notable local businesses include Kells Irish Restaurant and Pub and Beecher’s Handmade Cheese.
Most of the people of Seattle are diverse, as are the people frequenting Pike Place Market. To the south is the International Zone, which helps in this regard. The businesses are also as interesting a blend as the people are.
A short distance to the west, the community has access to the ocean. Residents can fish, boat, take charters, swim, and sun themselves. Pike Place Market is also located north by northeast of Harbor Island, which is a man-made island and one of the largest in the world, at just under 400 acres. This island is part of the Port of Seattle.
To the northwest of Pike Place Market is the Space Needle on the other side of the Alaskan Way Viaduct. This is arguably one of the most distinctive landmarks in Seattle. Built in 1962 for the World’s Fair, this structure is just over 600 feet high, and it is widely visible. The people of Pike Place have a great vantage point from which to view it.
To the southeast of Pike Place Market is the Seattle Art Museum, and the Seattle Central Library. Farther north of the neighborhood is the Westlake Center, a collection of stores in a four-story building. There is also a 25-story office building in the center. The area around Westlake Center is a major business place for Seattle, and the names of the businesses are too numerous to recount.
Pike Place Market itself is located at 1501 Pike Place, in Seattle, Washington.
