Located in one of the most historically significant sections of Lynchburg, the Rivermont neighborhood offers residents a look at the town’s history. Preservation efforts have helped to keep many of the area’s Civil War-era buildings intact and in outstanding condition. Newer apartments and commercial buildings in Rivermont have adopted the Georgian or Colonial Revival architectural styles of the older structures, giving the neighborhood a cohesive feeling.

The main Rivermont neighborhood is part of the larger Rivermont Historical District, which was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. It is located on the south bank of the Blackwater Creek in the northern section of downtown Lynchburg. Its boundaries are Blackwater Street to the south, the Amtrak train tracks to the north and west, and Blackwater Creek to the east. The area includes the ZIP codes 24503 and 24504.

Residents in Rivermont have plenty of attractions within walking distance. Several restaurants are located in Rivermont, including seafood restaurants specializing in local and regional catches. Large supermarkets and smaller grocery stores are located within Rivermont, along with several fashion boutiques and arts and crafts stores.

Rivermont was the first planned streetcar community in Lynchburg when the Rivermont Company constructed it in 1890. Before that time, the area was largely undeveloped agricultural land. The development of the neighborhood coincided with the construction of the Rivermont Bridge, which connected the neighborhood to Main Street on the other side.

Blackwater Creek is a popular destination for residents looking for some peace and tranquility as the river banks offer an outstanding place for a picnic or an invigorating walk. Another popular recreation site is the Daniels Hill Recreation Center, which has a playground and outdoor basketball courts along with picnic tables and barbeques.
