Norfolk is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Its population is 242,803, and it is the state’s second-largest city. Norfolk is bordered by multiple bodies of water, and so enjoys many miles of riverfront and bayfront property. It is linked to its neighbors by an extensive network of Interstate highways, bridges and tunnels.
Within the city is the community of Larchmont-Edgewater, founded in 1906 and one of the foremost communities in Norfolk. The area of Larchmont-Edgewater is bordered by the Lafayette River to the east and north, the Elizabeth River to the west and Old Dominion University, Highland Park and 52nd Street to the south. The neighborhood is bisected by Hampton Boulevard.
Larchmont and Edgewater are located on the west side of Norfolk in the 23508 zip code. More than 2,300 homes are located here, most of them occupied by single-family owners. Many homes were built in the early-20th century. They offer a mix of architectural styles, the dominant being Colonial Revival; but the neighborhood also features grand Victorian homes as well as Craftsman bungalows and new construction.
The neighborhood’s southern edge is bordered by Old Dominion University, one of the largest universities in Virginia, and WHRO, the region’s PBS TV station.
Adjacent to the PBS station is Larchmont Elementary School, serving students in kindergarten through fifth grade, consistently one of Norfolk Public School’s highest-achieving elementary schools. The school grounds include soccer, baseball and football fields, two playgrounds, six illuminated tennis courts and outdoor basketball courts. The Saint Patrick Catholic School serves pre-K through 8th grade.
Two popular community events include the September R.A.T. Race, a 5K and 1-mile run and family walk, and an April spring carnival. Hungry residents can head to new restaurants D’Egg West, and Taste Unlimited, a combination gourmet food store and cafe opened in August 2010.
The Larchmont branch of Norfolk Public Library offers computers, a meeting room and children’s area; adjacent to it is the Birdsong Wetlands, a small park created by volunteers to help filter water before it enters the rivers. Across the street is the Lafayette River Complex, a small Navy installation housed in a collection of older buildings along the Lafayette River.
