The Lawndale/Wayside neighborhood, within the 77023 zip code, is just a few miles east of downtown Houston and within walking and cycling distance of commercial centers and park spaces.
A pocket of commercial establishments is located to the southeast of the neighborhood. It is home to restaurants like El Portal De La Fantasia and Golden Seafood as well as bakeries and coffee shops including La Victoria Bakery. Cafe Flores, located on the other side of the area, is a local favorite with specialty smoothies and desserts. Shops like GameStop and entertainment options including Urban War Zone Paintball make Lawndale/Wayside central to plenty of entertainment options.
Lawndale/Wayside’s southern boundary is Interstate Highway 45, also called Gulf Freeway. Its eastern border follows Griggs Road through the point where it meets East Magnolia Street. A set of railroad tracks following Hughes Street acts as the neighborhood’s western border while it’s winding northern boundary line follows Capitol Street, up to Canal Street, to Harrisburg Boulevard and sloping southward along Woodvale Street.
The Gus Wortham Golf Course is the perfect place for amateur golfers to practice their backswing or for advanced players to get in a quick round before lunch. Accommodating up to 144 players, the golf course also has a pro shop and bar area for a drink or a bite after a game.
Park spaces include Mason Park to the northeast which has jogging trails, a public pool, and fields for soccer and football games. The park is bordered by a creek making it a beautiful escape from urban Houston.
