Located in the extreme Western tip of Texas, El Paso County is in the Chihuahuan Desert, the largest desert in North America. Because of this dry, desert atmosphere, El Paso County enjoys 300 days of sunshine per year. Residents and visitors take advantage of the beautiful weather and rugged terrain; popular activities include bouldering, canoeing, biking, and hiking.
The city of El Paso is the county seat and the sixth largest city in Texas. El Paso is located along the Rio Grande with the Juarez Mountains providing a stunning backdrop. Directly across the Rio Grande to the south is Ciudad Jarez, a city and the county seat of Chihuahua, Mexico. This bi-national metro area contains 2.4 million people, making it the largest area of its kind in the world.
Other cities in El Paso County include Horizon City and Socorro. Both are traditionally small suburban communities, but both are seeing rapid growth. Socorro is home to the Socorro Mission, built in 1840 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
El Paso County also contains a portion of Fort Bliss, the largest installation of the Army Forces Command. Towns included in El Paso County are Clint and Anthony, while some of the unincorporated communities include Sparks, San Elizario, Morning Glory, Agua Dulce, and Westway. Vinton is the county’s only designated village.
