Clifton/Southwest Neighborhood

One of the most appealing aspects of Nashville’s Clifton/Southwest neighborhood, especially for apartment dwellers, might be the West Nashville Farmers Market and Richland Park. The West Nashville Farmers Market was started in 2009 by an organization called Good Food for Good People. Residents welcomed them to Sylvan Park and gave them two areas of land for gardening along Richland Creek.

The result is a wonderful area of community gardens where vegetables are grown organically. These gardens give kids a chance to experience service-based learning. People from the neighborhood can get exercise or enjoy interacting with their neighbors. Some are even able to earn a bit of money from the gardens.

Clifton/Southwest is situated in zip code 37209. The boundaries of the neighborhood are Clifton Avenue to the north, railroad tracks to the west, Interstate 40 to the south, and 39th Avenue North to the east. It is located directly south of Tomorrow’s Hope and within an easy commute from Tennessee State University.

The neighborhood is characterized by many apartment complexes, both individual buildings and rows of apartments in clusters. There are a few single-family homes that are scattered throughout the neighborhood. At the far western edge of the community, there is an area that is occupied by empty railroad cars and buildings used as offices for the railroad lines that come through the city.

There is no shortage of things to see and do in nearby Nashville. The city is a destination for country music aficionados with the Grand Ole Opry and Country Music Hall of Fame. Other attractions include the Tennessee State Museum, Frist Center for the Visual Arts, and the Adventure Science Center.
