Sommerset West- Elmonica South Neighborhood

The community of Sommerset West-Elmonica South, in Beaverton, Oregon, is situated between the cities of Portland to the east and Hillsboro to the west. It is often misidentified as other area neighborhoods with similar names.

This community is bound by Sunset Highway (Highway 26) to the north, 158th Avenue to the east, Baseline Road to the south, and Cornelius Pass Road to the west. Cornell Road, which passes through the northern section of the community, connects it to Portland, Beaverton, and Hillsboro. Cornell also connects these cities to Portland-Hillsboro Airport. Walker Road begins in the neighborhood and heads southeast into Portland.

Another road, 185th Avenue, separates the predominantly residential eastside from the Oregon Graduate Institute (OGI) campus. The western portion has several residential areas, but academic buildings of the four-year private institute take up much of the land. OGI has an enrollment of more than 500 students, and is one of four schools of the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU).

Off of Amberwood Drive is the field office of Oregon Education Association. This union group represents Oregon’s 47,000 public school and community college educators. It is also a member of the National Education Association (NEA).

On the eastside, there are plenty of residential streets and public parks. Six of seven parks in the community can be found near 185th Avenue.

The eastern part of this community has Max-Elmonica Station on 170th Avenue near Highway 26. The station is part of the light rail system known as MAX. The Blue Line of MAX operates in this community.
