The Clackamas neighborhood of Sunnyside is defined by the Willamette River, Mount Scott, Interstate 205, the Clackamas Town Center shopping mall, and Ti-Met’s light rail system.
The Willamette River derives its name from the French pronunciation of a Clackamas Indian village. It was the destination of many immigrants along the Oregon Trail. The river is 187 miles in length from Eugene, Oregon, to where it converges with the mighty Columbia River at the Oregon-Washington border. It is best known for its recreational boating activities and its spectacular salmon fishing.
Mt. Scott acts as the Eastern boundary of Sunnyside. It is part of the Cascade Range, and rises to 1,091 feet in elevation. Named for Harvey Scott, a 19th-century editor of the Oregonian newspaper, Mt. Scott includes the Boring Lava Field, a volcanic cinder cone that last erupted 500,000 years ago. Most of the southern flank of the mountain is within the city of Happy Valley. The Willamette National Cemetery, where many military funerals are held, is located on the northeastern slope of the mountain.
Clackamas Town Center is the retail hub of the neighborhood. This two-level indoor mall, built in 1981, has 185 stores and an ice skating rink. An extensive, thriving retail zone dominates the neighborhood. Many of the homes in the area were built in the 1980s and 1990s.
This neighborhood has few sidewalks and some severe changes in elevation, making it a challenge for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. However, it is well supported by Tri-Met’s light rail system. This system gives residents easy access to Portland International Airport, downtown Portland, and the entire west side.
