Oklahoma City at a Glance
Mesta Park Neighborhood
Mesta Park has been one of Oklahoma City’s finest neighborhoods since it was platted in 1902, just 13 years after the founding of Oklahoma City. An old streetcar neighborhood, it features single-family homes of varying sizes and garden apartment buildings.
At the heart of the neighborhood is the beautiful community gathering space Mesta Park, which features green spaces and playgrounds. The unique name “Mesta” comes from Perle Mesta, the daughter of wealthy Oklahoma City businessman W.B. Skirvin. The famous phrase “Hostess with the Mostest” was originally the nickname of Perle Mesta, who was considered one of the greatest socialites in the city.
Prairie school is the dominant form of architecture here. Large porches and balconies overlook the tree-lined streets, and almost all streets have sidewalks to make walking safe and easy. Walking destinations are numerous. Wilson Elementary is an arts integration school, part of Oklahoma City Public Schools. Classen School of Advanced Studies, also a public magnet school, is considered one of the best high schools in the nation, located just west of Mesta Park.
The Uptown commercial corridor is within walking distance to the north of Mesta Park along 23rd Street. Currently, this area is filling with trendy local businesses and restaurants. Uptown 23rd blends into Classen Boulevard, which is also a busy commercial area with specialty grocers and other retailers. To the east, 23rd Street leads to the State Capitol, about a mile away.
Walker Avenue is the eastern border of Mesta Park, and it leads into the heart of Midtown and Downtown Oklahoma City. Both areas feature nightlife, culture, professional sports events, and large employment centers. Midtown’s 10th and Walker intersection is a popular gathering spot for all the residents of the inner north side.
Mesta Park is one of the nicest inner city neighborhoods in Oklahoma City, with charming historic character and easy access to the trendiest commercial districts in town.
