“Green” is all the rage at the University of North Texas – in fact, it has been since 1966. It was then that a sophomore left tackle named Joe Greene helped his team become one of the best college football defensive squads in the nation. The nickname given by the media for this defensive squad, Mean Green, was later mistaken for the star tackle in his rookie year with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mean Joe Greene went on to become a four-time Super Bowl champion and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was also the star of one of the best Super Bowl commercials of all time, a Coca-Cola commercial that aired in 1979.
These days, UNT is “going green” in another way. Its new Apogee Stadium is the first to use on-site wind power. It is also the first college football stadium to be LEED Platinum Certified. It is the new home of the Mean Green, the pride of Denton with 24 championships.
UNT was founded in 1890 and it is the flagship university in the Texas university system. It is also one of the largest universities in the state. Its College of Music is considered one of the top five music schools in the country. The College of Music is one of 12 UNT colleges.
Denton is halfway between the Oklahoma border and Dallas, with about 38 miles to each. Denton is a great town with a lively music scene and plenty to do. It hosts the annual North Texas State Fair and Rodeo as well as the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival.
