Willamette University - Salem, OR

In 1834, a missionary named Jason Lee founded a school for the missionaries’ children. He named it the Oregon Institute and served as the school’s first president until his death in 1845. The name was changed to “Wallamet University” in 1852 and finally to today’s Willamette University in 1870.

The oldest university in the West, Willamette University is a private liberal arts university. It offers post-graduate schools in business, education, and law. Willamette University’s urban campus is located just south of the Oregon State Capitol. The beautiful campus includes Waller Hall, the school’s oldest building. Waller Hall was built in 1867 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The oldest building west of the Mississippi still in use, Waller Hall currently serves as administrative offices.

Willamette is a highly-selective, top-rated university in a beautiful setting. This pedestrian and bicycle-friendly area is filled with stunning mountain peaks, miles of coastline, and impressive forests. Downtown Salem provides shops, restaurants, theaters, and museums. Perfectly located, Salem is less than an hour south of Portland, an hour south of Vancouver, Washington, two hours from Willamette National Forest, and an hour east of Pacific coast parks including Devil’s Punch Bowl State Park and Bob Straub State Park.
